One of the most fundamental tenets of effective distance education is that it must be "open" (i.e. available whenever and wherever a student needs it). At Werdermann eLearning Inc., we understand that this does not only refer to the ability of a student to gain access to the learning at any time, from any place, but also that it must come in a format that all students are able to use easily.
We are proud to say that our expertise in this area has been honed over the past decade to the point that we are often professionally consulted by organizations wishing to improve the accessibility of their own online offerings.
In order to ensure that we are available to the widest audience, we have programmed both our Learning Management System (LMS) and this website to comply with WCAG 2.0 and Section 508 accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.
All site and LMS text can be easily resized through any internet browser's "Zoom" feature. Colour combinations have been carefully chosen for contrast, and all links and images have been programmed with titles or "Alt Text" descriptions suitable for use with assitive technologies such as screen readers used by people with visual impairments. (The "Alt Text" descriptions of purely decorative images with no meaning have been intentionally left blank.)
"Skip to content" and "skip to navigation" links are available as the first links on every page of the website, LMS, and all courses to allow users of assistive technologies to quickly and easily jump over repetitive or decorative features and move directly to where they want to go. Furthermore, all main menu links on this website are repeated at the top and bottom of each page.
People who are not able to use a mouse will be pleased to know that all website and LMS pages can be navigated by using their computer's keyboard or other assistive technology such as speech recognition software or a sip-and-puff system.
Our LMS also allows students to set their preferences to access either Flash-based versions of their courses or HTML-based versions, which are more compatible with accessibility technology of all kinds. Every narrated course page includes a printable audio script for people with hearing difficulties.
We also understand that “accessibility” is not only an issue for people with disabilities. Students who must deal with low Internet bandwidth or computer systems lacking audio capabilities also benefit from the accessibility features described above.
Moreover, this website has been programmed using the latest programming methods for a fully adaptive and responsive display. Each page will respond and adapt to any screen size or orientation - including computer monitors, tablets (both landscape and portrait), and mobile phones.
Accessibility also relates to language preference. Currently, students may change their preferences to view LMS pages in
This website will offer the same functionality in the very near future.
